An Invitation to Attend Holy Week Services with Us

Dear in Christ,

I wanted to welcome all Orthodox Christians and interested non-Orthodox persons to join us during the Holy Week services, which are the most important of the Church's year. As a note, Orthodox Christians calculate the date of Pascha (Easter) slightly differently than other Churches. This year, however, Pascha (Easter) is the same day for all. Here is our upcoming schedule:

Sunday, April 17: Palm Sunday. Divine Liturgy: 10 am. This day we commemorate Christ's entrance into Jerusalem.

Thursday, April 21: Holy Thursday. Matins and Service of the 12 Passion Gospels: 6:30pm. This is the service where we read twelve Gospel readings focusing on Christ's suffering and crucifixion. Between the readings are hymns that reflect upon these saving events.

Friday, April 22: Holy Friday. Matins and Service of the Epitaphios: 6:30pm. This service is one of the most moving services of the year. We gather to celebrate the burial of Christ in the tomb, and have a procession with a symbolic tomb around the Church. Hymns are sung that focus on the mystery of the God of all creation lying in a tomb, with his soul descending to the realm of the dead to preach to the spirits of old, while also hinting at the resurrection to come.

Saturday, April 23 into Sunday April 4: Pascha, Easter, Resurrection! Midnight Office, Service of the Resurrection, Matins, and Divine Liturgy, followed by festal meal: 10:30 *pm*. We celebrate as a night vigil, so that at midnight we can begin the celebration of Christ's arising from the dead, the destruction of death, and the renewal of life!

Orthodox Christian services are very beautiful and poetic, and if you have never been to one, you are welcome to attend as a guest! We're a small mission (new Church community) and very welcoming to newcomers.

If you're Orthodox already but have not been to Church in awhile, why not come out and join us, and think about getting back in to the rhythm of the Church, which sustains us throughout life? If you have any questions, please feel free to call me beforehand. For those wishing to receive Holy Communion on Pascha, you must be an Orthodox Christian prepared by fasting and confession to a spiritual father of our Church. Please contact me if you have any questions about this. Even if you are not eligible to commune, though, you are still welcome to worship with us and enjoy in this, the greatest day of the year!

We look forward to seeing you!

In Christ,

Fr Anastasios Hudson
